5 Ways to Make a Quick Buck When Money is Tight

We’ve all been there. Maybe you just spent your last dollar on groceries or you don’t have enough to cover rent. Whatever the situation, getting low on funds can be difficult, embarrassing, and sometimes scary. But there are ways to make a quick buck you might never have thought of. Some require a little upfront cash, but most of them require nothing but a little hustle.

Sell your stuff

Almost everybody has stuff lying around their house they no longer need. And you might be surprised at what you can sell, especially online. People have sold things on eBay as odd as egg cartons, toilet paper rolls, pine cones, and tumbleweeds. So, don’t limit yourself to things you think are valuable.

Start out by cleaning out closets and drawers and putting everything in a box. If you have larger items, like bicycles or TVs, try selling those on Craigslist or a Facebook selling page. But for things you can easily ship, do a quick search on eBay or Amazon to see whether people are buying them.

If you have a little cash to spare upfront, you might also consider buying some things to sell. Many online sellers frequent garage sales and thrift stores, looking for bargains they can make a profit on. And you can also shop liquidation sales and wholesale outlets for unused merchandise that you can mark up.

Walk the neighborhood dogs

If you’re taking your dog for a walk anyway, why not stop by the neighbors’ houses and ask if they could use your service. You can walk a few dogs at a time and charge as much as you’d like. But most dog walkers charge from $10 to $30 per 30-minute walk. If you’re opposed to going door-to-door, you can also sign up on online services, like care.com or rover.com. These sites allow people who need dog walkers to find one in their area and hire them directly from the app.

Get a quick loan

Getting a loan through a bank can take time, collateral, and credit that you may not have. And if you’re in a bind, your options might be pretty slim. In these cases, you can apply for online payday loans. These types of loans sometimes get a bad rap, but the truth is that they are providing a specialized service for people who might not otherwise be able to secure a loan. And if you pay them off on time, they’re only slightly more expensive than traditional loans.

The best thing about payday loans is that you usually get your funds within 24 hours.

Mow your neighbors’ lawns

Mowing lawns isn’t just a kid’s job. Many big landscape businesses were built from the ground up starting with just mowing people’s lawns. But you don’t have to have big ambitions or even do it forever if you need some quick cash over the weekend. Just pop next door after you’ve mowed your own lawn and ask your neighbor if they need your assistance. Sometimes, if the other neighbors see you working, you’ll even get a few requests for help with their lawns.

Drive

Driving for companies like Lyft and Uber has become an increasingly popular way to make money. And they’re said to make an average of $8.55 to $11.77 per hour after expenses. But this amount can be much more, depending on how much and where you work. For example, driving in New York City might average you close to $30 an hour and you could easily make a full-time living if you wanted to. These companies usually pay weekly, but because you can receive tips, you’ll probably be able to earn some quick cash every time you drive.

A Guide to Serum Screening for Down Syndrome

It is common for mothers to want to know as much as possible about their developing babies. Discovering your child’s genetic health and chromosomal status, for example, could give you information about certain conditions your child may have. This can help you make informed decisions about your child’s future. You can learn about your baby’s genetic health in the first two trimesters of pregnancy through a test called serum screening. Here’s what to expect from serum screening for Down syndrome.

What Is Serum Screening?

Serum screening, also called the multiple marker test, uses a maternal blood sample in the second trimester of pregnancy to assess the risk of chromosome disorders in the infant. A serum screening has the ability to detect Down syndrome and Edwards syndrome, as well as conditions such as anencephaly and spina bifida. This noninvasive test for Down syndrome works by analyzing the mother’s DNA fragments during pregnancy. Analyzing cell-free DNA sequences can determine whether the infant has more chromosome 21 present than the average baby. This leads to an accurate prediction of whether the fetus has Down syndrome.

During maternal serum screening, the mother gets a single blood test done around 15 to 21 weeks’ gestation. If the mother already received first trimester screening, she may only receive serum screening in the second trimester for open neural tube defects. Serum screening measures biochemical markers in the mother’s blood, including alpha feto-proteins and inhibin A. the levels of these markers are typically different in mothers carrying babies with Down syndrome. Measurable differences, therefore, could point to a chromosomal abnormality.

Serum screening does not provide a definitive Down syndrome diagnosis. Instead, it simply groups mothers into high or low-risk categories based on predictions. Your healthcare provider should receive the results of your serum screening within one week of the blood test. This type of noninvasive prenatal DNA testing is popular in mothers who may have risk factors for Down syndrome, such as advanced maternal age. If the chance for Down syndrome is greater than 1/385 according to the serum screening, it is a positive result. False positive results are possible.

Are There Other Down Syndrome Screening Options?

Mothers have several noninvasive prenatal tests (NIPT) to choose from when trying to screen for Down syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities, on top of serum screening. The NIPT test you choose depends on your unique needs, concerns, and goals. Here is a breakdown of three noninvasive screening options available to mothers in the second trimester:

  1. MaterniT ® 21 PLUS. This NIPT test screens for Down syndrome and trisomy 21, as well as other conditions, such as DiGeorge syndrome. Parents can customize their tests according to risk factors.

  2. MaterniT® GENOME. This test is a robust option that can give parents information about every chromosome for a more comprehensive view of the baby’s health.

  3. informaSeq®. This tests for common trisomies such as Down syndrome but has the option not to reveal information about fetal gender, unlike other NIPT tests.

Serum screening has been in use for over 40 years. Only recently, however, noninvasive prenatal screens became available. Serum screening can detect 80-90% of infants with Down syndrome, trisomy 18, and open neural tube defects depending on the test chosen and the stage of pregnancy. Later, a diagnostic test can confirm or deny a positive serum screen. First and second trimester serum screening may be the right NIPT for your family.

What To Do Before Opening Your Bakery

Are you a baker? Do you have a bakery? Are you planning to open a bakery? If you answered yes to at least one of these questions, then you should consider many things before the opening doors to your business. Carefully making sure everything is ready before opening could make a big difference in how customers view you and if you will be successful with your new business.

Obviously, people will be coming to your bakery because of the treats you are baking. Whether you are selling cookies, cakes, pies or specialty desserts or a combination of all of these, your food must be good. Make sure before you open the recipe has been perfected. Make sure you have all the supplies and resources in order to operate your new business. Make sure you have what you need from the administrative end and for baking your confections. Perfect these delicious confections. You want treats that are completely different than what the other bakeries are offering. Create an iconic flavor of giving one of your delicious creations a unique name. Doing all of this will set your bakery apart from other bakeries. This will also help customers to remember your bakery by having something special in it.

Pests like sweet treats. Check your bakery before your grand opening to make sure no pesky pests have hidden anywhere in your bakery. It is always safe to have your business treated for pests before you open. Pest control services St. George businesses trust can help with controlling pests and making sure your new bakery is free of pests. You will want to treat your business regularly. A customer finding any pests, especially in an establishment that serves food, would cause a customer to not want to return. Multiple customers finding pests would cause your bakery to gain a reputation for not being clean and professional. This would ultimately slow down business and your revenue could decline significantly. The health department would rightfully get involved and may shut your business down for a temporary amount of time until you could meet their standards and regulations.

Marketing is vital to all businesses but especially new businesses. Before opening, get the word out about your new bakery. Create flyers and pay a team of people to pass out these flyers. Consider having your flyers be apart of the mail. Run a commercial on television. Develop a social media advertising campaign to reach people in your local area. Truly understand the customer who wants your products and reaches out to those people. Give special offers for the first few customers. Marketing will create buzz around your new business and will help with branding.

Before opening, make sure your finances are right. Have accurate prices for all your delicious baked treats. Check out what our surrounding bakeries are selling for the same product. It’s best to be close to their prices. Make sure you have calculated how much it costs to run your business and put at least fifty percent markup in your prices.

Staff is important. Hold a meeting a few days before you open with anyone that will be working at the bakery. You need to have enough staff to bake your sweet treats. You don’t want to run out on the opening day. Make sure everyone on your team is dedicated and hard working.

You will have to have enough inventory before opening your bakery. Not enough inventory means you will run out of supplies and equipment and may not be able to fulfill orders for customers. Having too many supplies or too many perishable food items could potentially be a waste of money. Have enough to get you started, then order more supplies and food items and eventually you will have to carry a large stock of items due to the demand from your growing customer base.

Most importantly, before you open the doors to your bakery, remember to have fun. You began a bakery for a specific reason. If this is your passion. If you are trying to do something good for your community or if you like the entrepreneurial side of running a bakery, remember why you began and allow that to push you forward when things get hard.

How To Get Your Garden Ready For Summer

It’s exciting as the season begins to change from spring to summer and the promise of outdoor BBQ’s, garden and dinner parties, and sitting outside in the late evening sun is on the horizon. Get your garden looking its very best in time for the warm weather by giving it a spruce up, removing tired and damaged items that have accumulated over the winter, and inject some fresh and verdant life back into it with the help of newly planted flowers, plants, and pretty hedgerows.

Having a relaxing haven of calm to step out of your door onto can help you to feel less anxious, relieve symptoms of depression, and put you in a positive frame of mind. Spending time surrounded by nature is widely recognised as being beneficial for your health, so consider this an added bonus of getting your garden ready for summer.

Serene Water Feature

When you picture an oasis of calm, you might imagine the soft tinkling of a water fountain, a quietly running stream, or lily pads cast out atop an open pond. So why not design these elements to feature in your garden? Doing so is far less difficult than you might think and you can have a professional team to create the look you’re after in time for summer.

Water Garden designs are the epitome of garden sophistication and essence of tranquillity, so figure out where best you could house a small pond, water fountain, and adjoining rock garden if you want to incorporate a grotto feel to your back garden.

Luscious Lawn

The health of the grass in your garden can make or break the way it looks. Consider fresh turf if the grass you have is patchy and, despite your best efforts and attentiveness with lashings of grass seed, isn’t going to be flourishing and verdant in time for summer. If your grass is mostly healthy aside from some browning patches, then consider cutting out these squares and replacing them with new turf, or even garden path tiles to create an inviting walkway to the water feature, summerhouse, or the vegetable patch, for example.

Adding Shady Spots

Get your garden ready for summer by creating enough shady areas so that you and your family can take shelter from the heat of the midday sun during the hotter spells. Do this by erecting a pergola, a gazebo, or even planting trees earlier in the year so that they will eventually have the time to grow for the summers ahead. Underneath the shelter created by wooden and roofed frames, be sure to station a table and chairs to serve as ample space to enjoy eating outside. This is ideal for entertaining, and for decorating with items such as attractive cushions and pillows, lamps suitable for the outdoors, candles, and any bedded and potted plants that thrive in less exposed areas, like roses.

Lighting

Although summer evenings tend to stay lighter for longer, it’s still a good idea to add some warm-coloured twinkling lights to put up in amongst the branches of trees. You could also light the way with lanterns, and use solar lights to make the communal spaces feel cosy and warm even after the summer sun has gone down.

How to Choose a Professional Roofing Contractor

Do you need to fix or replace your roof?

You may not be familiar with the process involved in roofing until you need to fix or replace your roof. Although there is a need for urgency after a damaging wind or storm, there’s a whole lot to learn about the process involved, the products to use and the procedures that meet your roofing needs.

Using a professional roofing company instead can make your life much easier but finding a roofing contractor who is professional, honest, and trustworthy may be a difficult task. However, reading this guide will help you know the most important things to be aware of with choosing a professional roofing contractor for your next roofing project.

The following guidelines will help homeowners choose a reputable and trustworthy roofing contractor that will give you a value for your money.

1. Proof of Insurance

Asking for proof of insurance is important because you wouldn’t want to pay for a lot more than a roof. If an underinsured or uninsured company have an accident on your property, you may be liable for the accidents.

It’s essential for any roofing contractor who wants to work on your home to have both liability and workers’ compensation insurance – it will ultimately protect you in case an accident occurs.

With liability insurance, contractors are covered for job-related damages or accidents to your home. While workers’ compensation insurance covers the employees in case they get injured during the job.

2. Contact Information

You should know the location of your contractor in case there’s trouble. The physical address is important because a contractor with a nearby office is likely to offer better service. They’re usually more informed about local roofing requirements and also provide valuable feedback on the performance of different products.

Having confirmed a contractor’s permanent place of business, ensure you check their tax identification number, phone number, and where applicable, their business license.

3. Evidence of License

Ensure the roofing contractor is appropriately licensed. Although some states have particular licensing requirements, others do not. You can confirm this information with your state’s Department of Professional Regulation or Licensing Board.

4. References

You can only get detailed feedback from real-life experiences through references. You have a less chance of potential scam once your roofing contractor is able to provide you with several referrals or references from previous jobs.

Online reviews may be inaccurate or incomplete. Communicating with an actual reference can give you the facts that you need based on their experience with the roofing contractor and feedback on products used since installation.

5. Never Choose A Contractor Based on Price

While you want a fair price on your roof fixing or replacement, you also need to understand that price isn’t everything. Choosing contractors with cheap bids (without ample experience or proper insurance) will end up in cheap service – getting what you pay for.

In the long run, you’ll end up spending more to fix issues that’d have been covered by a reputable roofing company under warranty.

6. Recommended Products

Since you have gotten tips on how to choose a professional roofing contractor, you shouldn’t spend your precious time researching the roofing options anymore. A roofing contractor should walk you through the shingles, flashing, decking, and related products that are a right fit for your needs and budget.

If you need more information about general roofing service, you may want to contact a professional roofing contractor.

We’re a professional roofing contractor with a guaranteed rest of mind on your property!

Three Serious Dilemmas You Might Encounter when Building Your Dream House

Everyone, when they were children, had plans of making their dream house into a reality. So, as we grew older, much of our efforts in studying and working became more aligned with us building our home in the future. Now that you have the means to buy supplies, hire workers, and design your dream house, surely every step of the building process will be meticulous. You want every part of your home to be perfect, but, inevitably, you might encounter various problems when building your home. So, you can prepare for these problems; listed here are the common ones.

  1. Soundproof rooms or not?

Privacy has always been a big problem in homes, especially for adolescents who need the freedom to explore their capabilities. With them in mind, your home might need soundproofed rooms so their privacy is not encroached on. When family members are playing loud music or fighting, you will not hear a thing and live peacefully in your dream home. Thankfully you can make this feature happen by customising your party walls or the walls between houses. You can ask a party wall expert about this, but you will need to pay party wall surveyor fees before the construction can start.

  1. Brick walls or not?

Heavy rains occur here and there in this age as global warming alters the whole temperature of the earth, prompting more water to be produced and dispersed through the rain. Bricks make the best walls, since bricks, when put together, absorb moisture. Your house can be a flood-free residence. Bricks also give a rustic feel to your home, making it more attractive to passers-by. If you are into modern architecture though, you might want to leave out brick walls and instead install an anti-flood system. You can elevate your house or put a drainage system in your front lawn. You can also set a warning system that will alert your family when water from flooding reaches your front yard.

  1. Centralised airconditioning system or not?

Being cocooned in one’s home all day long without any ventilation can get tiring and uncomfortable – even more so when families gather in the living room, and no fans are available, especially during hot summer days. The problem needs a solution in the form of a centralised airconditioning system. With this system, anywhere you step inside your house, you get to experience cold and fresh air. There is no room for heat in the whole house, except in the kitchen, making your daily activities more comfortable and enjoyable. This system, though, has its cons as the cost of your electricity bills may skyrocket.

In making your dreams come true, you might have to go through numerous struggles. In the case of building your dream house, these struggles may come in the form of investing in ventilation, anti-flood systems, and soundproofing. You need to think thoroughly about everything before you decide.

Flipping Properties into Multi-Units

With the US in the throes of a coast-to-coast affordable housing crisis, it’s going to take the implementation of several different solutions to begin making this problem more manageable. Many Florida residents and potential retirees dreaming of moving south lament the limited affordable choices for housing in the Sunshine State.

One option is for investors to begin researching and identifying single family units that can feasibly be turned into duplexes or multi-family properties. This can be a viable option for those who plan to retire in Florida on a low or fixed income, but it can also appeal to investors looking to create niche opportunities.

Since this can be a confusing process, read on to learn about the basics of turning homes into multi-units.

Zoning and code enforcement

The first hurdle will be zoning, although there are sometimes options to obtain variances and zoning changes if the right home happens to be in the wrong zone. In other cases, a single lot may be subdivided into two lots, so that each dwelling structure can be considered a single-unit dwelling. This way, there are multiple potential ways to divide the space.

The best course of action is to speak directly with the municipal planner and code enforcement officer once you’ve identified a property of interest to discuss options and procedures.

Lot requirements

Compare the present size of the lot and square footage of the home against the maximum coverage requirements presently in place. This will help you determine if building an addition or separate secondary building is feasible.

Study the setbacks and potential layout of the additional space. Especially in the front of the existing building, in case the road is ever widened in the future.

Neighborhood considerations

Study the neighborhood to ensure it makes sense to create a two- or multi-unit in the area. If you wind up needing some sort of variance, approval could be more likely if the modifications are sensible and don’t create a nuisance or uncharacteristically out-of-place property that might affect the values of the surrounding homes.

Also consider the job market in the area, and if the average or median local wage will be sufficient for someone to afford your proposed rental. If your property is near a courthouse, for example, do a quick salary search for court reporters in Florida, or check out job postings for employers in the area to see what wages are most commonly being offered.

Access and amenities

Parking is always an important consideration, especially when the lot size is already relatively small. Tenants and emergency services alike will need easy access to the rental property, which could mean granting easements if the lot will be subdivided instead.

Consider the adage, “great fences make great neighbors”, as you contemplate privacy options and both indoor and outdoor living space. Focus on making a space that is enjoyable for both the landlord and tenant as well as their guests, especially considering that tourism is such an important draw in Florida.

Mortgage, insurance, and taxes

If you will be a first-time landlord, note that the market value of rental properties is calculated differently than single family homes. Rental property valuation is focused on potential annual income, so it is possible that the value of the home could decrease after the second unit is complete.

First-time landlords may also need to complete landlord and tenant certification courses depending on the type of loan program, so be prepared to outline your whole process from the rental application to returning the security deposit after move-out.

Also check with an insurance agent about changes in insurance rates, as well as any additional riders that may need to be added to the policy. Ask about available discounts for various safety features so that you can include these in the initial design process to save money down the road.

Keep in mind that additions to the property could make the tax assessment increase, so this might be another adjustment to consider when speaking with a tax professional.

The History of Honda Racing

When you take a spin down Honda racing’s memory lane, you can’t help but be impressed by the enduring success of the brand and the sport. From Soichiro Honda’s manufacturing passion and racing vision to a major manufacturer that deals in everything from OEM parts Honda motorcycle to motorcycle tires for sale, the brand persists. Here’s a brief look back at Honda’s racing history.

Father Figure

Soichiro Honda was born in Japan in 1906. His upbringing and education led him to join automobile servicing company Tokyo Art Shokai where he helped build a Curtiss racer and lent his hand to tuning cars. Eventually, he formed a company that manufactured piston rings. Following its sale, he founded Honda in 1946.

Honda put the emphasis on manufacturing motorized bikes, and the first official version went to market in 1949. The company started racing its bikes in 1959 and by 1964 it was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world.

Racing Highlights

Honda entered five bikes in the Isle of Man race in 1959 – he was the first Japanese manufacturer to compete in the race – and his team swept the podium in 1961. Honda went on to join the Formula One racing circuit from 1963 to 1968. In 1965, the manufacturer won at the Mexico Grand Prix with driver Richie Ginther. After a hiatus, Honda returned to the circuit, winning its first 500 cc Grand Prix World Championship in 1983.

World Championships

Through the remainder of the 20th century and into the 2000s, Honda has gone from strength to strength in many forms of racing. The company’s accolades include the following titles:

  • Eight World Enduro Championships
  • Six Motorcross World Championships
  • Three world championships (at observed trials)

If you’re the proud owner of a Honda or any other brand of bike, invest in motorcycle OEM parts today and return it to its factory-floor glory. Just think of it as paying homage to the motorcycle world’s original designers and manufacturers such as Soichiro Honda!

Need Money Now? Here’s How to Sell Your Old Electronics Fast

Chances are like most people you have plenty of old electronics laying around that you no longer use. From smartphones to cameras to laptops and tablets, we tend to hold onto old electronics, even years after we’ve upgraded them. But in the digital marketplace, your old electronics can potentially earn you hundreds of dollars.

Want to learn how your old electronics can make you quick cold hard cash? If you’re tired of thinking “I need money” and you’ve got old electronics lying around, you’re in luck. Here’s how you can sell your old devices fast.

Gazelle

Gazelle is one of the most popularly used websites for trading in phones, smart watches, and other electronic devices. Using the site, you can trade in all sorts of items including:

  • iPads
  • Tablets
  • Samsung, Android, and Google phones
  • iPhones
  • Computers
  • Other devices

Gazelle works in a matter of minutes. All you have to do is provide information about your device, and then an offer is sent to you in less than a minute. Items worth more than $1 ship for free. There are several payment options to choose from, including check, PayPal, or an Amazon Gift Card.

If you’re looking for instant cash, you can stop by a Gazelle Kiosk and get immediate cash for your device. Note that the kiosk only accepts tablets, phones, and MP3 players. Kiosk offers also tend to be a little lower compared to online offers.

Best Buy Trade-In

Have old devices you don’t use? Do you like shopping at Best Buy? If so, now is a great time to consider the Best Buy Trade-In program. To get a quote for your electronic device, you’ll need to pick a product category along with a manufacturer, model, and condition. Once you’ve answered all of the questions about your device, the online tool will offer an estimated value.

If you accept the offer, you’ll be given a Best Buy gift card. You can choose to bring your device to a local store that accepts in-store trade-ins, or you can ship the item to Best Buy using a prepaid label.

Nextworth

Nextworth is one of the few trade-in programs that gives money for electronic devices. The company pays via PayPal or check, and you’ll usually receive your payment a week after the device has been received.

To get started on the trade-in process, you’ll have to answer questions about the computer, tablet, phone, or smartwatch that you’re trading in. Nextworth will send you a cash offer. If you accept the company will send you a prepaid shipping label.

As long as the device is accepted and the indicated condition is correct, your money will be on its way. If for some reason there’s a discrepancy, you can ask for the device back or take the revised offer.

Use Amazon Trade-In

Amazon is involved in all sorts of different business factions, so it’s no surprise that the giant retailer also offers a trade-in service for old electronics. Using Amazon Trade-In, you search for an item, enter details about it, and then select the condition of the device. Amazon will then make an offer for your device. If you accept the offer, you’ll be sent a shipping label.

From here you simply ship the item to Amazon. Within two days of the item being received, you will be given an Amazon gift card with the offer amount. If for some reason the item is in better condition than described, Amazon’s promise is to pay you more to account for this.

The only drawback to using Amazon Trade-In is that your money is restricted to use on Amazon, but surely you can find a few things you need from the tens of thousands of items they sell!

Apple GiveBack

Similar to Amazon Trade-In, Apple also offers a program where you can trade in your old Apple devices. You can choose to give back your old items at an Apple Store in person or you can do an online give back. The online option takes about 2-3 weeks.

What’s nice about this program is that Apple also accepts other devices, including other brands of computers, tablets, phones, and watches. With Apple GiveBack, your trade-in value will be paid via an Apple Store gift card. You can also choose to have the trade-in value applied towards your purchase of a new Apple device.

If for any reason your device isn’t accepted, you can turn in the device to have it recycled for free.

Conclusion

Your old devices don’t have to sit around and collect dust any longer. Using these trade-in programs, you can get money or a gift card for simply trading in a phone, tablet, computer, or smartwatch that you no longer use. Easy money is the best money!
