How To Protect Your Home and Feel Safe

If you’d love to take a few extra preventive measures to ensure that your home is protected and that you feel as safe as possible in your own home, continuing reading to discover a few helpful home security tips!

How to protect your home and feel safe:

1. Consider installing security cameras outside your home

In order to be able to track what’s going on around your property, it’s well worth installing a few inexpensive security cameras outside your home.

If you’re tempted, one of the best places to place a security camera on your property is at the front entrance to your home. That way, if you hear someone knocking on your door, you’ll be able to check your security camera feed via a smartphone app, to see if you recognize the person knocking on your door.

As if there is a mysterious individual knocking on your door, who isn’t a courier, a neighbor or a friend or family member, you may want to choose to ignore them.

2. Place motion-activated lights outside your home

Carefully placed, motion-activated lights are great deterrents to would-be thieves who may try to scope out your property, to try and gain access to your home. As, if a bright light turns on and catches individuals lurking on your property they’ll most likely leave your property straight away so that their presence isn’t detected either by a member of your household or one of your neighbors.

Motion-activated lights will also help give you peace of mind as if you hear a noise that is a little out of the ordinary, you’ll be able to investigate straight away. As your “intruder” may just end up being one of your neighbor’s cats.

3. Replace the locks on your doors and windows

Another way to feel safer in your own home is to get the locks on your windows and doors replaced, with more secure locks. Which will make it a lot tougher for individuals to try to gain access to your home.

If you’ve recently moved into a new property, that was previously owned or occupied by another individual or family it’s also a great idea to get the locks on your home’s front and back doors changed so that the past residents won’t be able to use an old key to get into your home. You may want consider looking into nearby locksmiths who can also help you out with further home security options.

4. Consider adopting a dog

While you shouldn’t adopt a dog, purely for security benefits, if you have room in your heart and your home for a new addition to your household, you may want to consider adopting a new dog. As dogs make great security guards and the mere presence of a dog of any size, is likely to deter would-be criminals from trying to access your property.

Alternatively, if you’re not interested in adopting a puppy or dog, you may want to consider placing beware of dog style signs on your fence.

5. Make sure to keep your garage locked

If you can access your home from your garage, it’s important to keep your garage locked at all times. As you’d be amazed at the number of criminals who simply waltz into people’s homes by waking straight through open garages into a family’s hallway.

Hopefully using the five home security tips listed above will help you feel safer in your home and will protect your home from potential threats!

How To Run a Remote Team: A Helpful Guide

You may have noticed that the percentage of employees who work remotely from their homes has rapidly increased in recent years. In fact, by 2020 studies show that roughly half the UK’s workforce will work remotely, rather than in a traditional office environment.

How to run a remote team:

1. Make sure that you communicate with each member of your team on a regular basis

The key to supporting your team members in working remotely is to make sure to communicate with each team member on a regular basis. As an example, you may want to consider using a professional messaging application on your business’ intranet, to check in with each team member twice a week.

If your business currently doesn’t have the resources to offer such a solution, you can also use regular messaging apps such as Google Chat, to talk with your team.

Alternatively, if the majority of your team lives in the same city, you may also want to use your Google calendar to schedule weekly in-person meetings for individual members of your team or your entire team. Which will ensure that your team members stay on track and are clear about your team’s current priorities and objectives.

2. When it comes to selecting new team members, make sure to choose individuals who boast a proven track record

When it’s time to add new team members to your remote team, it’s well worth selecting individuals who boast glowing references on their resume as you need to be able to trust remote team members to work just as hard as they would at home, as they would in a traditional job environment.

Also keep an eye out for resumes from individuals who describe themselves as being independent workers as they will adjust to being a remote worker far better than an individual who depends on others, to stay focused and productive!

3. Utilize Google Documents

One way to allow multiple members of your team to edit a single document is to encourage your team members to use Google Documents. Which they can then send to other members of their team, for their input.

On the sidebar of Google Documents, you’ll even be able to have a discussion about the document in question and to refer to different highlighted points, which individuals have created.

4. Don’t be afraid to pick up your phone and call your team members

It should be a standard rule that during office hours, all of your team members should be available to be contacted by phone. So instead of spending countless minutes writing up an email to send to one of your team members, pick up your phone and give them a call.

5. Make sure that each team member is equipped with the right equipment to productively work remotely

Make sure that you provide your team members with the laptops, headphones, microphones, and equipment to work from home efficiently. As their performance reflects directly on your business!

6. Make sure your team is properly trained

You’ll also want to make sure your team has the proper health and safety training such as the courses EssentialSkillz offers and that they are on board with the expectations of the job. It is important to communicate and that your employees have a clear understanding of what is expected of them, not just on the job, but keeping safe as well.

So if you’re looking to manage a remote team, it’s well worth using the helpful advice listed above to effectively manage your team!

Fun Activities For Those Who Enjoy Singing

Do you love singing? Are you the person people can hear several doors down serenading yourself in the shower? When you’re doing the housework do you have the radio playing full blast and find yourself singing along to all the latest hits? There are millions of people around the world who enjoy singing. Not everyone has the voice to take them to Broadway or the West End, but we love singing because it makes us happy.

A love of singing often starts very at a young age. Do you have a child that does nothing but sing, whether they’re in the car, on the way to bed, shopping, or walking to school? You might be wondering whether there’s anything you can do to nurture their love of music. Here are some fun activities you might like to try.

Invest in a Karaoke Machine

This is something all the family can have fun with. A karaoke machine is not too expensive, and there are so many to choose from. Take it in turns to belt out your favourite tunes. You might be surprised how many songs you actually know the words to. If you’ve never done it before you might well find karaoke a life-changing hobby and find yourself holding regular karaoke parties. Make it even more fun by encouraging your kids to dress up for the occasion. Not forgetting, of course, the odd accessory such as long wigs, bandanas, jewels, hairbows, and sunglasses.

Join a Local Choir

Your local church, college or school might have a choir you can join, either as a family or for your child on their own. Being around others who enjoy singing helps them improve, and they’ll also make new friends.

Take Them to the Theatre

If you live near to London, this is something you can do on a regular basis. If London is a fair distance away this type of activity can be enjoyed on a special occasion such as a birthday. There are plenty of musicals for kids showing in the West End, and there are always new shows you can enjoy. Current favourites at present are The Lion King and Aladdin. When you get home, encourage them to put on a show of their own.

Attend Live Music Concerts

This isn’t something you’ll want to do when your kids are really young, but as they get older why not take them along to a music concert? Their taste in music might be influenced by you to begin with, but over time they’ll develop some favourites of their own. If you feel really adventurous and would love the experience of being surrounded by music for more than a couple of hours, look for a family friendly music festival to attend.

If you belong to a family that shares a love of singing why not create as many opportunities as you can to enjoy something you love doing? People who sing are happier, healthier, and live longer, regardless of whether they’re the next contender for X-Factor. Sing whenever and wherever you want to and don’t worry about who’s listening.

Add a Built in Vacuum To Your House For Easy Cleaning

Built in vacuum systems are becoming more popular in modern homes with every passing year. With owners looking for added convenience, along with reduced energy costs and improved air quality, it’s easy to see why. You’ll find that cleaning your home is significantly easier, more convenient, and you might even end up saving money. Of course, these aren’t the only benefits.

Read on for more information on built in vacuums:

Built in Vacuums

Built in vacuums, also known as central vacuum units, allow you to clean the dirt out of the various rooms of your home by simply plugging a vacuum hose into a previously installed inlet.

These inlets are added to each room and connect to a central power unit that is installed in an out-of-the-way place in the home such as an attic or garage. When the vacuum is switched on, dirt and debris are drawn through in-wall tubing and ultimately carried to the central power unit. Once there, it is deposited in a bag that can be conveniently emptied out once every few months.

There are two main types of central vacuum units for you to choose from: cyclonic and filtered. A cyclonic system uses centrifugal force, not unlike that of a tornado, to separate dust and debris from the air. A filtered system separates the dirt from the air by use of a filter, which needs to be replaced on occasion. When shopping around for a central vacuum unit, you’ll have to decide which of these types you prefer.

Reasons to Choose a Built in Vacuum

There are a multiple benefits to choosing a built in vacuum over a more commonplace portable vacuum. Among these are easy cleaning, added cleaning power, improved health, reduced noise, and green cleaning. Let’s break it down:

Easy Cleaning

Central vacuuming units have another major benefit over portable vacuums; they involve a lot less lugging heavy equipment around! To use a portable vacuum, you simply need to carry your vacuum hose and brush into any given room and attach it to the pre-installed inlets. A portable vacuum, on the other hand, has to be carried from room to room and up flights of stairs, leaving you exhausted by the time the work is done.

Cleaning Power

Portable vacuums have to be carried from room to room and, as a result, the engines that power them are small and comparatively weak. Built in vacuums, on the other hand, can be powered by a much larger motor and therefore get your home much cleaner with far less work.

Health

Naturally, maintaining healthy air in your home should always be a consideration. Cleaning regularly is one of the most contributors to this; however, standard portable vacuums tend to stir up nearly as much dust as they remove. They end up filling the air with dust, pet dander, and other allergens.

A central vacuum unit will eliminate this problem by drawing the dust and dirt away into the in-wall tubing and avoid recirculating dirty air. Ultimately, this renders your air much cleaner and your home far healthier than other cleaning methods.

Noise

Portable vacuums are extremely noisy; peace and quiet and home cleaning don’t need to be mutually exclusive, however. Because the central power unit is located far away from rooms that you’ll want to keep quiet, such as bedrooms and kitchens, they make significantly less noise in the areas where it matters most.

Green Cleaning

If you’re trying to maintain a green home, a central vacuum system is often your better option. Its increased power means less cleaning, which means less energy used overall. Ultimately, you’ll save on your power bill, as well as see an increased environmental benefit.

The Cost of Central Vacuuming

Of course, the above benefits may seem all well and good, but you may be turning your thoughts to another important consideration: cost.

Many homeowners assume that central vacuum units must be too expensive to be practical for an average home. Or that, at the very least, they’re significantly pricier than portable vacuums. Actually, this isn’t necessarily true; in fact, while a built in vacuum can run several thousand dollars, this isn’t actually any pricier than a good-quality portable vacuum (which offers none of the above benefits.)

Not only that, having a portable vacuum will end up saving you money over time due to reduced spending on filters, less time spent cleaning, and even reduced costs on doctor’s visits and allergy medications.

In addition, having a central vacuum system can actually increase the value of your home as potential buyers are likely to pay more if there is already a built in vacuum.

How Do I Get One?

If you’ve weighed all the relevant factors and decided that a built in vacuum is right for your home, what is the next step? First, do a little research. It’s possible there are many businesses in your area offering to install central vacuum systems, and they are likely not all equal.

As with any major purchase, it’s important to look into who can do the job near you. Do not automatically be drawn to the one with the lowest cost; as with most things, you get what you pay for. Before making any decisions, it’s critical to check online reviews and look for which business has left the most customers satisfied. Don’t be afraid to ask around and talk with any businesses you are considering.

Our Recommendation

If you want a central vacuum installed, you’ll want to have it regularly inspected, and occasional maintenance and repairs will have to take place, so it’s a good idea to go with a company that offers all of these services, as well as a warranty.

Gary’s VACUFLO is a perfect choice if you’re in the Portland, Oregon area as they offer installation, maintenance, and even a Preferred Customer membership program, which includes free clog removal services, free shipping, and even free replacement bags and filters.
