Tips for Parents Who Are Visiting Their Child at BYU

When children finally leave home, there’s a bittersweet feeling that seems to hang around. Are they eating well? How are they adjusting to college life? Considering 94% of students experience homesickness within the first few weeks of college, this is perfectly normal for any family member to worry. That’s why if your student is attending Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, this guide will help you plan for a pleasant stay for everyone!

Accommodations

College is all about independence, and as any college student will tell you, college dorms are not the greatest receiving place for guests. Having a hotel room allows for more privacy and a bit more space to catch up. Luckily, there’s a number of pleasant hotels near BYU to pick from that will give both visitors a comfortable visit but still avoid upsetting the feeling of independence in college. Here’s a few select to consider:

Hyatt House Provo/Pleasant Grove

Conveniently located at the heart of the business district (which is a great location for all ages), is the Hyatt House Provo/Pleasant Grove. Amenities include pet-friendly accommodations, free internet access, free parking, outdoor pool, business center, and on-site restaurant. Best of all, this hotel is located within walking distance of Evermore Park and less than eight miles from American Fork Canyon.

La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Orem University Parkway

Located just off of I-15 with easy access to Salt Lake City, La Quinta by Wyndham Orem University Parkway is a comfortable stay and within easy distance from Brigham Young University. This hotel offers pet-friendly accommodations along with free parking and free WIFI, which is great for both college students and visitors on the go.

Courtyard by Marriott

The Provo Courtyard by Marriott is located less than two miles from the BYU campus and close to several popular outdoor activities, including hiking, skiing, zip-lining, and mountain climbing. The courtesy shuttle is offered by the hotel to transport guests to the area’s best attractions.

Restaurants

When visiting Provo, Utah, you will want to make sure that you hit the best eateries. Not to mention that 36% of college students don’t get enough to eat, so a trip off campus to grab a bite to eat would be really appreciated! These two restaurants provide a great space to catch up and delicious food to share.

H BAR

If you’re a fan of craft cocktails and bar bites, the H BAR is a great first stop. Located within the Hyatt House Provo/Pleasant Grove, this is a great place to grab a bite and to catch up in a friendly setting. Their menu includes delicious, zesty Korean street tacos and an extensive “Sip + Snack” menu.

Bombay House

Less than a mile from BYU, Bombay House is famed for its authentic Bombay and Indian cuisine. This restaurant offers warm and intimate lighting and beautiful decorations to bring guests right into India, all without leaving Utah.

Popular Attractions

When visiting the BYU campus, there are a few places that will be great for the entire family to enjoy and to help give your student a break from the hustle and bustle of school life.

Evermore Park

If you have ever wanted to step into a fantasy world, this is the place to do it. Evermore Park immerses guests into a European village of fantasy where guests can explore this developed world with activities and characters throughout. This park has enough to spend hours of fun completing interactive quests. Thankfully this park is located close to Hyatt House Provo/Pleasant Grove since there is so much for guests to explore.

Seven Peaks Water Park Provo

A 26-acre parking with winding water slides, a lazy river, and more, Seven Peaks offers a lot of excitement for families looking to spend the day blowing off steam. There’s a little bit for everyone when it comes to the slides and pools, but also smaller attractions for younger kiddies. This is a wonderful attraction for those planning to visit in the warmer months.
