The cost of being a single parent

To discover the true cost of being a single parent, simply continue reading to read about all of the costs associated with being a single parent.

The cost of being a single parent:

1. Accommodation

One of the most significant expenses that single parents have to pay for is accommodation as while couples who raise a child can split the cost of rent or mortgage payments, single parents often are left paying for rent or accommodation on their own. While other single parents may resort to living with their parents, to cut down on accommodation costs.

2. Utilities

Single parents should also set aside a large portion of their weekly take-home income to pay their utility bills such as their electricity bill and internet bill.

3. Food

Another sizeable expense that single parents have to budget for is weekly food expenses for their household.

4. Clothing

Another frequent expense that single parents have to budget for is clothing. As kids grow quickly and require new clothes every few months. Furthermore, many kids wear through their clothes quicker than adults, especially kids who enjoy playing outside and getting dirty.

5. Child care expenses

Single parents often have to pay for child care expenses, especially if they choose to work a full-time job, in order to provide for their child or children. While other single parents may drop their child or children off with trusted family members or friends, while they’re at work. In fact, it’s quite common for single parents to get their own parents to look after their kids while they work.

Furthermore, singe parents get to enjoy less time to themselves as while couples who raise their children together can take turns looking after their kids in order to give their partner a break, single parents seldom get a break from taking care of their kids.

6. School-related expenses

Single parents are also responsible for paying for all of their children’s school-related expenses such as uniforms, stationery, books and electronic devices such as laptops and tablets.

7. Extracurricular activities

Single parents also have to pay for their kids’ extracurricular activities such as the costs associated with music lessons, dance lessons, and sports teams. Many single parents struggle to pay for the costs that are associated with more expensive extracurricular activities such as horse riding, ice skating, and ballet lessons. All of which can incur costs of over $100 per week.

8. Stress

Being a single parent can be an extremely stressful yet rewarding experience as most single parents devote their lives to their children and may even work extra jobs to provide for their family. While other single parents spend each minute of their day taking care of their young children, without getting a 10-minute break to themselves. Single parents often feel isolated as a result of not having enough spare time to catch up with their friends.

Although there are many costs associated with being a single parent, most single parents wouldn’t change their circumstances and love being single parents and getting to experience every moment of their kids’ childhoods.
